Growing plants isn’t just confined to the summer season. Bring the garden indoors during the winter with houseplants. Even if you have a small space, there is a houseplant that will be perfect to add to your home.
Houseplant Care Tips
Watering
- Most houseplants suffer from too much water rather than too little. Different varieties need different amounts of water but, when in doubt, keep houseplants on the dry side
- When watering, water thoroughly, letting a little water drain out the bottom of the pot. Place a saucer under the pot to catch extra water.
- Wait until the top ½” – 1” of soil is dry or the pot feels light before watering again.
- Don’t let houseplant sit in water, this can suffocate the roots.
- Fungus gnats (small, flying insects that resemble fruit flies) are often a sign of overwatering.
Environment
- Different plants require different amounts of light, you may see these descriptions for light requirements: high light (6 or more hours of light per day), medium light (4-6 hours of light per day), low light (3 hours or less of light per day).
- Because many houseplants come from tropical areas, they need to be protected from cold temperatures and drafts. Keep in a room that is 55° F or above.
- Rotate the pot ¼ turn each time you water to keep the growth even.
Maintenance
- Fertilize houseplants in the spring and summer when they are actively growing.
- Plants can be pruned to maintain their size; this is best to do in the fall.
- Remove dust from the leaves with a soft cloth or rinse off in the shower.
- If the roots are circling the inside of the pot, it’s time to replant. Move to a slightly larger pot using fresh, lightweight potting soil. You can also trim off some of the roots and repot in the same pot using fresh soil.
- Watch for aphids and spider mites, spray with water and treat with insecticidal soap if needed.
