Chervil

Herb

Summary

The delicate, feathery foliage of Chervil adds an appealing soft texture to the landscape! This upright annual herb is similar in appearance to Parsley, but has a sweet flavor and is often used to replace Parsley in French cooking. Fresh chopped leaves can be used to flavor eggs, potatoes, and fish dishes, or whole sprigs can be used for garnishing. Mix the plant throughout annual beds or in combination containers, or pot by itself and place on deck and patios. Plant Chervil near radishes to give them a sharper flavor or lettuce to protect the leaves from ants, aphids and slugs.

Description

Culinary herb for gardens and containers. Attractive sprigs make a colorful garnish on the dinner plate. Leaves may be used fresh or dried in culinary dishes. Wash fruits, vegetables and herbs thoroughly before eating.

Pruning

Prune plants freely to maintain the desired size and shape. Pinching plants back stimulates dense, bushy new growth and encourages more flowers. Remove old flowers to keep plant looking healthy and prevent seed production that drains the plant’s energy at the expense of forming new flowers. Some plants are grown only for their attractive foliage (such as coleus, dusty miller and flowering kale). Their flowers are not very showy and any buds should be pinched off to keep the foliage looking its best.
